Budapest, Hungary 2006

DECEMBER 31, 2006

Introduction

I had the great privilege of being able to travel to Budapest, Hungary twice in 2006. I could go look up the dates, but is it really that important? :-) Below are some pictures from my trips.

A bit of background, historically there were two cities: Buda & Pest. As engineering became better, bridges became better and more permanent. One of the famous ones I think is referred to as “The Chain Link Bridge”. The building of that sorta commemorates or signifies the beginning of people looking at it as Budapest. I am not sure when or how it was “officially” made one city. You can see two of the bridges towards the end.

Buda side of the city

Buda side of the city, and you can see the King’s castle in the foreground.

Bridges Galore

They have a number (5?) of bridges connecting Buda and Pest. Here’s one of them in the foreground, and another just before the river turns. Also, on the right you see some apartment building and then the Parliament building.

Pest side of the city

From the Buda side of the river. The large building is the King's Castle.

Typical Street

This is a typical street found on the Pest side of the river.

Scary Site

Humor filled or fright filled?

Statues, statues, statues

There are tons of statues around the city. A lot are indicative of life in the city. Commemorating historical life, not people or events.

Jewish Sculpture

Very cool sculpture at one of the largest Jewish temples in Europe.

Beautiful Churches

A lot of nice churches too; here’s one.

Gothic Churches

Here’s part of another; big and “gothic”. Too bad I couldn’t get farther back to get a good picture of the whole thing.

Parliment Building

I guess I’ll finish it up with a picture of the Parliament building. It was under a huge renovation & cleaning project for a number of years.
